Making Healthier Food Choices to Lose Weight As You Age or At Any Age

Be calorie conscious and make healthier choices to lose weight and keep it off. Losing weight can be as simple as choosing one food over another with less calories.

I recently published an article on Factoidz on Losing Weight As You Age or At Any Age.

Making healthier and lower calorie choices was a big factor in my weight loss.

There are 3,500 calories in one pound.  If you are on a sensible diet and reduce your caloric intake by 350 calories a day, you can lose a pound in ten days.

That leaves us with the question, how many calories can I eat in a day to maintain a weight I have or to get to a weight I want to be?

If you are an active woman weighing 150 lbs. or want to get to a weight of 150 lbs., you should consume no more than 1,800 calories a day. You can figure out your calories a day by multiplying your desired or current weight by 12 for women and by 15 for men.

I’ve developed the habit of looking at the calories in various foods I am eating to choose one food over another with fewer calories. For instance, I like to eat a nutritional bar, energy bar or cereal bar every day. Before I lost weight, I would just buy one from a store without looking at the calories in the bar. I was surprised to learn that the calorie count in these bars varied greatly. For instance, a Cascadian Farm Organic Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar has 80 calories while their Organic Chewy Granola Bar Chocolate Chip has 140 calories. That is a difference of 60 calories in one day and 600 calories in ten days. You can compare calories by looking up calories in different food on many web sites.

I like cereal in the morning and I used to just pour the cereal in the bowl. I found that I could pour two cups of my Multi Grain Cheerios without thinking at 220 calories or use a measuring cup and pour one cup at 110 calories saving 110 calories a day or 1,110 calories in ten days.

Switching from whole milk with 146 calories in one cup to fat free or skim milk with 88 calories in one cup saves you 58 calories a day or 580 calories in ten days.

Switching from a honey bran muffin from Dunkin Donuts at 480 calories to one cup of Multi Grain Cheerios at 110 calories at breakfast will save you 370 calories a day or 3,700 calories in ten days. With that one change alone, you can lose more than one pound in ten days.
